How do you read an interface specification?

Five numbers, in the order they matter for a home studio:

  1. Microphone preamps. How many XLR microphones you can record at once with phantom power. This is the decision.
  2. Maximum gain in dB. Not listed in this database because manufacturers report it inconsistently, and the single most useful specification if you own or want a low-output dynamic microphone. Check it on the datasheet.
  3. Analogue outputs. Two feeds a monitor pair. Four lets you run an outboard hardware loop without giving up your monitors.
  4. Headphone outputs. One is fine alone. Two on independent mixes is the feature that matters the moment a second person is in the room.
  5. Connection. Whatever your computer has. For under eight channels this is not the bottleneck people believe it is.

Which interfaces have eight microphone preamps?

Eight is the count that makes a drum kit properly recordable, and there are only 2 of them here. This is the one place where channel count genuinely changes what you can do rather than how conveniently you can do it.

What the specifications do not tell you

Three things decide how an interface feels to own, and none of them appear on a specification sheet.

Driver longevity. The most valuable property an interface has, and the hardest to verify before purchase. An interface whose driver stops being updated becomes a paperweight at the next operating system release, and that has happened to plenty of otherwise excellent hardware. RME and Focusrite have the strongest track records here, which is most of what their premium buys.

Maximum gain. Reported inconsistently and omitted here for that reason, and it is the specification that decides whether your microphone will work. Check it directly against the gain staging calculator before ordering.

Metering. Two LEDs versus a real level display is the difference between setting gain by looking at your screen and setting it by looking at the box. Sounds trivial, and it is the thing you interact with on every single take.

Two for almost everyone. One preamp covers a single voice or a single instrument, which is the singer-songwriter case and nothing beyond it. Two lets you record a voice and a guitar at once, or a stereo pair. Four is the point where a duo playing live together becomes practical, and eight is where a drum kit becomes properly recordable. Most home studios never need more than two.

Why do interfaces advertise more inputs than they have preamps?

Because a total input count sells better than a preamp count. An interface described as 18 in might have two microphone preamps, two line inputs, eight ADAT channels that need a separate eight-channel preamp box you do not own, and a stereo digital pair. The preamp number is the one that decides how many microphones you can record at once, and it is the number this database lists separately for exactly that reason.

Does the audio interface affect the sound quality of a recording?

Far less than people expect, and far less than the microphone or the room. Converter performance has converged so completely that the difference between a $150 interface and a $1,000 one is below the noise floor of most home rooms. What the expensive one buys is preamp gain, driver stability, routing flexibility and metering, all of which are real benefits that have nothing to do with sound quality.

Is 192 kHz worth it on an audio interface?

Almost never for music recording. A 48 kHz sample rate captures everything up to 24 kHz, which is above the top of human hearing, and higher rates double or quadruple your processing load and disk usage for a benefit most people cannot demonstrate. The exceptions are specific pitch-shifting and time-stretching workflows and some plugin oversampling. Choose an interface on preamp count and driver quality, not on its sample rate ceiling.

What is the best audio interface for a beginner?

A two-preamp box in the budget or mid band with driver support that will still work in three years. The Audient EVO 4 at around $137 and the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 at around $225 are the two most defensible choices, the first for lowest cost to a working setup and the second for driver longevity. Neither will be the limiting factor in a home recording.

Does bus power matter?

It matters more than it sounds if you ever record away from the desk, because it removes a power supply and a hunt for an outlet from every session. 27 of the 38 interfaces in this database run on bus power. Externally powered designs are generally the ones with higher channel counts or higher headphone output, where the bus simply cannot deliver enough current.
