Why this site puts the room first
A microphone captures the source plus the room, in one file, permanently. Monitors reproduce your mix plus whatever the room does to it. The interface and the headphones are the only parts of the chain the room does not touch.
Which means the room is the highest-leverage thing in a home studio and the line almost everybody cuts first. Every build on this site allocates 15 to 25 percent of the total to acoustic treatment, and the cost calculator flags it when yours falls short.
The good news is that the two biggest improvements are free. Working out what your room does with the mode calculator and then positioning everything with the placement calculator costs nothing and routinely beats the first several hundred dollars of panels.
The recommendation I give most often and that people most often ignore: buy the cheap interface and put the difference into the corners. An EVO 4 plus four hundred dollars of corner absorption will beat a thousand dollar interface in a bare room every time, and it is not close. Converter quality has converged. Rooms have not.
