How to Choose an Audio Interface
Most home studios need a two input interface with at least 56 dB of preamp gain, 48 volt phantom power, and direct hardware monitoring. Converter quality stops being the limitation at around $250, so above that you are buying I/O count, driver stability and headphone amplifier power rather than better sound.
An audio interface does four jobs: it converts microphone and instrument signals to digital, supplies preamp gain, sends audio back out to monitors and headphones, and does all of it with low enough delay to play along to. Everything else on a spec sheet is a variation on those four.
The short version, which the rest of this page justifies: two inputs, 56 dB or more of gain, phantom power, and direct monitoring covers almost every home studio. Past about $250 you stop buying better sound and start buying convenience and reliability.
How many inputs do you actually need?
This is the only spec that reliably changes which interface you should buy, and it is decided by one question: do you record more than one sound source at the same time?
Overdubbing, recording one part at a time onto a click, needs exactly one input. Two gives you a microphone and a guitar without repatching. Everything above that is for genuinely simultaneous capture.

People routinely buy four or eight inputs for "room to grow" and then never record two things at once. That money buys more if it goes into a microphone or into treating the room, both of which change the recording audibly where spare inputs do not.
What does preamp gain matter for?
Gain is the one spec that can genuinely disqualify an interface, and it comes down to which microphone you own. Low output dynamics need a lot of clean gain, and an interface that runs out will add hiss before it reaches a usable level.

If you own or want a low output dynamic , check the gain figure before anything else. An interface at 50 dB paired with a microphone that wants 60 is the single most common cause of a noisy home vocal recording, and it gets blamed on the microphone almost every time.
Why converters stop mattering above about $250
Converter quality genuinely improved through the 2000s and then largely stopped being the bottleneck. A modern entry interface converts audio well enough that the room, the microphone and the performance are all larger factors by a wide margin.
So what does an expensive interface buy? Three real things, none of which is "better sound":
- Driver stability. Holding a 32 sample buffer for hours without a dropout. This is what people who track for a living actually pay for.
- Headphone amplifier power. Enough to drive 250 or 600 ohm headphones properly. A weak amp makes good headphones sound thin, and it gets blamed on the headphones.
- I/O count and routing. More inputs, more outputs, and internal mixing you can configure.
Saying that plainly matters. If you are choosing between a $999 interface and a $250 interface plus room treatment, the second option produces better recordings almost every time.
What about latency, USB and Thunderbolt?
Latency is the delay between playing a note and hearing it. It becomes distracting somewhere around 10 ms round trip and unplayable past roughly 20 ms for most people, though drummers notice sooner than anyone.
Two things solve it. Direct hardware monitoring routes your input straight to your headphones inside the interface, bypassing the computer entirely, which makes latency effectively zero regardless of what you paid. Thunderbolt lowers round trip latency further and costs meaningfully more. It earns its price if you monitor through plugins while tracking. For everyone else USB is the correct answer.
The spec sheet items that do not matter as much as they look
- 192 kHz sample rate. Recording above 48 kHz doubles or quadruples your file sizes and CPU load for a difference almost nobody can identify in a blind test. 44.1 or 48 kHz is the professional norm for a reason.
- Bundled plugins. Frequently the largest line on a feature list and the least durable, since bundles change and licences are often time limited.
- Dynamic range figures past about 110 dB. Real rooms have a noise floor far above that, so the extra headroom is theoretical.
How to choose in one pass
- Count how many things you record at the same time. That sets your input count, and for most people the answer is two.
- Check the gain figure against your microphone. Under 56 dB rules out low output dynamics.
- Confirm phantom power and direct monitoring. Both are near universal, and their absence is disqualifying.

How many inputs do I actually need in an audio interface?
Two for almost everyone. One microphone plus one instrument covers songwriting, podcasting, voiceover and overdubbed production, which is the overwhelming majority of home recording. Four inputs make sense if you record a singer and guitarist simultaneously or want a hardware synth left permanently connected. Eight or more only pays for itself if you are recording a drum kit, and drums are the one job that genuinely changes the answer.
Do more expensive audio interfaces sound better?
Up to about $250, yes, audibly. Past that the converters stop being the limitation and you are paying for I/O count, driver stability, and a headphone amplifier that can actually drive high impedance cans. An RME at $999 does not make a vocal sound four times better than a Scarlett at $225. It stays rock solid at a 32 sample buffer and never drops out, which is worth a great deal if you track for a living and almost nothing if you do not.
What does the preamp gain figure actually matter for?
One microphone type, mostly. Dynamic ribbon and low output dynamics like the SM7B need roughly 60 dB of clean gain, and interfaces in the 50 to 56 dB range will hiss before they get there. If you own or want an SM7B, check the gain spec before anything else or budget for an inline preamp booster. Condensers draw far less gain and work happily on any modern interface.
Is USB or Thunderbolt better for a home studio?
USB is correct for almost every home studio. Thunderbolt buys lower round-trip latency, which matters when you monitor through plugins on the way in, and costs considerably more. A modern USB-C interface with a good driver reaches latency low enough to track comfortably, and direct hardware monitoring sidesteps the problem entirely at any price point.
Do I need phantom power and what is it for?
Yes if you use a condenser microphone, since 48 volt phantom power is what makes the capsule work. Every interface worth buying has it. What varies is whether it can be switched per channel or only globally, which matters if you ever run a condenser and a ribbon microphone at the same time, because phantom power can damage some vintage ribbons.
Will a better interface fix my recordings?
Almost never, and this is the most expensive misdiagnosis in home recording. If a recording sounds thin, boxy or amateur, the cause is nearly always the room, the microphone placement, or the performance, in that order. Interfaces are the most upgraded and least impactful part of a home studio. Treat the room first, since it costs less and changes far more.
