The traditional answer is monitors first, headphones as a check. That answer comes from an era when everyone worked in a purpose built room, and in a bedroom it inverts for most decisions. A small untreated room can impose swings of 15 dB or more at low frequencies across the width of a chair. No headphone is that wrong about anything.

This is where the recommendation comes from, and it is worth doing the arithmetic rather than comparing the headline price of a pair of speakers against a pair of headphones.

Roughly 4.5x the cost, and that is before the monitor path's hidden requirements: a room you are allowed to put panels in, a listening position you can actually place symmetrically, and neighbours who tolerate the volume. The open back pair has none of those prerequisites and works at two in the morning.

If you are going down the monitor path, budget the treatment in the same purchase rather than later. Good monitors on isolation stands with corner traps and four first reflection panels is a coherent purchase. Better monitors in the same untreated room is not, because the room is the limitation in both cases.

Why is an untreated room worse than headphones?

Because of what a rectangular room does to low frequencies. Every dimension supports a standing wave at a frequency set by that dimension, and the formula is simple: frequency equals the speed of sound divided by twice the dimension.

A 12 ft dimension produces an axial mode at 47.1 Hz, with harmonics at 94.2 Hz, 141.3 Hz and upward. At the pressure maximum of that mode the frequency is reinforced, and at the pressure minimum it is cancelled. The difference between those two places can exceed 20 dB and they can be three feet apart, which is well within the distance between where you sit and where you stand up.

The failure mode is specific and it is the reason home mixes come back with no bass. Sit in a null at 60 Hz, hear no bass, add bass to compensate, and now the file has far too much of it everywhere that is not your chair. The mix that taught me to stop trusting an untreated room fell apart in a car. It was balanced at my desk and the low end was simply gone on the road, and I spent a week convinced I had a monitor problem. What I actually had was a null at the mix position, and my chair was sitting in it. Two corner traps and a listening position moved to about 38 percent of the room length fixed a problem no EQ was ever going to reach, because the cancellation was in the air and not in the file. These days I do the whole balance on headphones because it is repeatable, then confirm weight and loudness on the monitors, and the two almost never disagree any more. What do headphones get wrong?

Two things, both correctable, and neither of them fixed by spending more.

The stereo image is wrong by construction. On speakers your left ear hears the right speaker about 0.6 ms late and filtered by your head, and that crossfeed is what makes a soundstage appear in front of you. Headphones send each channel to one ear only, so the image wraps around the inside of your skull and hard panned elements feel detached. The practical consequence is that headphone panning decisions come out too wide. The fix is to check mono often and to pan more conservatively than feels right.

There is no physical low frequency. Below about 100 Hz a lot of speaker judgement comes from the chest and the room rather than the ears. Headphones give the frequency without the sensation, which is why headphone mixes tend to come out either bass shy, because it never feels like enough, or bass heavy, because a driver an inch from the eardrum makes a lot of level effortlessly. Does one of them fatigue you faster?

Yes, and it changes how you should schedule a session. Listening fatigue is the gradual loss of judgement that arrives long before anything sounds obviously wrong, and it arrives sooner on headphones for two structural reasons.

A headphone driver sits a fraction of an inch from the eardrum with no air distance and no room absorption between the two, so the same perceived loudness is delivered with a sharper, more concentrated presentation. There is also no physical relief: on monitors your head moves, the room breathes, and the sound field changes slightly with every shift of posture. On headphones the presentation is fixed and identical for the entire session, which is precisely what makes it a reliable reference and also what makes it tiring.

In practice that means about 45 to 60 minutes of headphone work at a moderate level before the decisions start getting worse, against something closer to 90 minutes on monitors. The tell is always the same: you start making larger moves, adding rather than subtracting, and turning things up rather than turning other things down. When you notice that pattern, stop, because everything decided after it will need redoing.

Two habits fix most of it. Work at a fixed, moderate level rather than riding the volume, because a level you know is worth more than a level that feels good in the moment. And make the final loudness call on a different day from the mix, on whichever reference you trust most, since loudness is the single decision fatigue distorts most reliably.

How do you know whether your room is good enough?

Two tests, both free, and they will tell you which reference deserves your trust today.

  1. The head movement test. Play a track you know extremely well and move your head a foot left, right, up and down. If the bass changes substantially, you are listening to room modes rather than to the recording, and monitors are currently reporting the room.
  2. The consistency test. Mix something, then check it in a car and on a phone. One mix being wrong tells you nothing. Three mixes wrong in the same direction is the room telling you a lie in that direction, and treatment corrects it where a new pair of speakers does not.

If the room passes both, monitors are the better primary reference and headphones become the detail tool. Which monitors and which headphones?

On the monitor side, size to the room rather than to the budget.
