Reflection Filter vs Room Treatment: Which Fixes a Vocal?
A reflection filter mounted behind a microphone absorbs some of the sound heading backwards and reduces the closest reflections. That is a real but limited effect, concentrated at higher frequencies. Treating the room addresses the reflections that actually make a recording sound boxy, and it improves everything you record rather than one microphone position. If you can only do one, treat the room.

Do reflection filters colour the sound?
Some do. Placing an absorbent shell close behind a microphone changes what arrives at the capsule from the rear, and with a cardioid microphone that can produce a slightly boxy character of its own. Position it far enough back that it is not almost touching the microphone, and listen critically rather than assuming it is an improvement.
What is the cheapest thing that actually works?
Distance from walls and something soft behind you. Move the microphone away from corners and hard surfaces, put a duvet or a full wardrobe of clothes behind the recording position, and get closer to the microphone. Those three cost nothing and typically beat a hundred dollar accessory.
Does the direction you face matter?
Considerably. Facing into a room with the nearest hard wall behind the microphone rather than behind you changes which reflections reach the capsule and when. In a rectangular room, recording into the length rather than across the width usually helps. Try several orientations and record a short test in each before spending anything.
Would a closet work better than either?
Often, yes, and it is why so many voice recordings are made in wardrobes. Clothes are effective broadband absorbers and a full wardrobe has depth, which is what thin panels lack. The limitation is space, air and comfort. Empty closets with bare walls are much worse, because the walls are close and hard.
