Monitor Isolation Pads vs Stands: Decouple or Reposition?
Foam pads stop a monitor vibrating the desk, which removes a source of resonance and some low mid muddiness, for around twenty dollars. Stands do that and also set the tweeter at ear height and move the speaker away from the reflective desk surface. Height and position affect what you hear more than decoupling does, so if you can only do one thing, get the height right.

Choose the Studio monitor isolation pads for 5 inch monitors, pair if…
Choose the foam pads if the height is already right or the budget is small. Decoupling a speaker from a desk is a real improvement: vibration transmitted into the surface returns as a delayed, coloured version of the sound, and pads largely stop it. It is one of the cheapest genuine upgrades in a home studio and there is no reason not to do it.

Choose the IsoAcoustics Iso-155 isolation stands, pair if…
Choose the stands if the tweeters are not at ear height, which they usually are not on a desk. Vertical position changes the frequency balance you hear more than most equipment choices do, because a tweeter aimed at your chest sounds dull and one aimed above your head sounds thin. Adjustable stands solve the height, the tilt and the decoupling at once.

Frequently asked questions
How high should the tweeters be?
At ear height when you are seated in your normal position, aimed at your head. If the speakers must sit lower, tilt them upward so the tweeter axis points at your ears. This single adjustment changes the high frequency balance you hear more than swapping speakers usually does, and it costs nothing to try.
Does the desk itself cause problems?
Yes. Sound reflects off the desk surface and arrives at your ears slightly after the direct sound, which cancels and reinforces at different frequencies and produces a dip in the low mids. Raising the speakers, tilting them, or putting something absorbent on the desk between you and them all reduce it.
Are expensive isolation products worth it?
The physics is straightforward and cheap foam achieves most of it. What the more expensive designs add is stability, adjustability and a defined tilt, which are practical rather than acoustic advantages. If you need the height and the angle, they earn their price. If you only need decoupling, foam does the job.
What about placing monitors on a shelf?
It is usually poor, because a shelf couples the speaker to a large panel and puts the drivers close to a wall, which reinforces the low end unevenly. If it is unavoidable, decouple the speaker, pull it as far forward as possible, and use the low frequency trim switches most monitors have to compensate for the boundary.
