Why can thin foam not absorb bass?
A porous absorber works by air movement through the material, and air velocity is highest a quarter wavelength away from a hard boundary. A 50 Hz wave is roughly 7 metres long, so its quarter wavelength point is well over a metre from the wall. A 2 inch foam wedge sits nowhere near it and simply does not intercept the energy. Thickness and distance from the wall are the whole mechanism.
What actually works for low end?
Depth and position. Thick porous absorbers, ideally 4 inches or more, placed across corners where low frequency pressure is highest, and with an air gap behind them. Purpose built membrane or Helmholtz traps target specific frequencies more efficiently at the cost of being narrower and harder to build. Neither is a small foam wedge.
Can a room be over treated?
Yes, and it is common. Cover every surface with thin absorption and you remove the high frequencies while the low end continues to boom, which is exhausting to work in and misleading to mix on. A balanced room keeps some liveliness. If a room sounds dead but still boomy, the fix is deeper bass absorption, not more thin panels.
How much treatment does a bedroom studio need?
As a starting point: first reflection points on both side walls, the ceiling above the listening position, something across the rear wall, and as much corner absorption as you can accept visually.
